DriveComfort plans routes that suit the size of your vehicle. It is built to need as little about you as possible: there is no account, and the app never asks for your name, e-mail address or phone number. This page describes what the app and our server actually do.
Who is responsible
DriveComfort is made and operated by Andreas Kviby, an individual developer, who is the data controller for everything described on this page. The address at the bottom of this page is the contact point for any privacy question or request.
There is no account
On first launch the app generates a random identifier (an "install id") and registers it with our server. That identifier, your platform and the app version are all the server knows about the installation. There is no sign-up, no advertising identifier, and we do not store your IP address in our database. Erasing your data or reinstalling the app produces a new, unconnected install id.
What leaves your phone when you use the app
- Route candidates and your vehicle class. To score a route the app sends the lines of the proposed routes. A route line starts where you are and ends at your destination, so our server sees the origin and destination of a planned trip. The request itself is not stored. The scored result is held in a temporary cache for 10 minutes under a content key, with no device, token or IP address attached, so reroutes need not be recomputed.
- Route explanations. After each plan and reroute the app uploads the explanation, including origin, destination, vehicle and your preferences. These are stored and linked to your installation until you erase your data. They exist so route decisions can be reviewed during the early test phase.
- Trips. Mode, vehicle model and class, planned and actual duration and distance, comfort score, reroute count, and any rating or comment you give. No positions are stored.
- Road reports you submit. Position, heading, report type and vehicle class. These are kept as road knowledge; if you erase your data the report stays but loses its link to you.
- Charging stations you report on or rate. Which station, whether it worked or what was wrong with it, and an optional good / OK / avoid rating with a few fixed reasons. You may add a comment; comments are read by us for moderation and are never shown to other drivers. If your phone knows where you are we use it for one thing, on the spot: to record whether you were standing at the charger. That position is not stored. Like road reports, these are kept as knowledge about the charger and lose their link to you when you erase your data.
- Answers to "is this still here?". While you drive, the app may ask at most three times per trip whether a hazard another driver reported is still there. We store which hazard, your answer, and the time. A question you ignore is stored as "no answer" and is used for nothing today. These answers are what keep the road information from going stale, and like road reports they lose their link to you when you erase your data.
Optional anonymous driving data
Sharing anonymous driving data is off by default. Switching it on in Settings helps find streets where large vehicles get stuck. When it is on:
- The first 300 m and the last 300 m of every trip are never uploaded, so your home and your destination are not part of the stored data.
- A recorded point holds position, time, speed, heading, accuracy and whether you were on the planned route. At most one point per second, and points with poor accuracy are dropped.
- Raw recorded points are deleted automatically after 30 days.
- What we keep longer are conclusions about the road itself, with the road segment, vehicle class and severity, and no link to your trip or your installation.
- Switching the setting off stops recording immediately, and the server refuses uploads for any trip that was not started with your consent.
Location
The app asks for location permission while you use it, because it cannot plan or guide a route without knowing where you are. Location updates continue in the background only while a navigation session is running, so guidance keeps working with the screen off or when CarPlay shows another app.
Other services we use
- Apple Maps (MapKit) - your device asks Apple directly for routes and place searches, under Apple's own terms.
- MET Norway (weather) - our server rounds the points along your route to about one kilometre and asks for the forecast of those grid cells. MET Norway sees our server, never your device or your identity.
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass and Open Charge Map - our server sends a simplified corridor along the route. They see our server's address and the corridor, never your device, your install id or your IP address.
- Cloudflare - traffic to our server passes through Cloudflare as a security and delivery layer.
There are no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics SDKs and no tracking in the app. We do not sell or share personal data.
Where your data is stored
On our own server and database in Frankfurt, Germany, inside the EU, under EU data protection law. All traffic between the app and the server uses HTTPS.
How long we keep it
- Raw recorded driving points: deleted after 30 days, automatically.
- Cached route results: 10 minutes. Cached weather forecasts: deleted shortly after they expire, and they hold no device or trip reference.
- Your installation, preferences, vehicle profiles, trips and route explanations: until you erase them.
- Conclusions about roads, road reports, and reports and ratings of charging stations: kept as knowledge about that road or that charger, without a link to you.
Erasing everything
In the app, Settings → Delete all my data deletes your installation record, access tokens, preferences, vehicle profiles, trips, recorded driving points and route explanations from our server. The app then forgets its token and install id and switches data sharing off. You do not need to contact us and you do not need to explain why.
You can also write to us to ask what we hold, to get a copy, to have something corrected, or to object to a use. Because there is no account, tell us your install id (shown in the app's settings) so we can find the right records. Nightly database backups are kept for seven days, so an erased record can still exist in a backup until those rotate out.
Legal basis
- Providing the service (route scoring, navigation, trips, reports): necessary to deliver the app you chose to use.
- Anonymous driving data: your consent, given by the Settings switch and withdrawable at any time in the same place.
- The launch notification list on this website: your consent.
The launch list on this website
This website has a form for being told when DriveComfort reaches the App Store. It is separate from the app: no install id, token or driving data is involved. We store the e-mail address you type, the page language, which form you used and the time you ticked the consent box. We do not store your IP address, user agent, referrer or cookies. The address is used for one thing: telling you that DriveComfort has launched. Ask us at any time and the entry is deleted, not merely flagged.
Children
DriveComfort is a driving aid intended for licensed drivers. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or why, we will update this page and the date at the top, and say so in the app before the change takes effect.
